BBC Four – Churches: How to Read Them

This BBC Four programme, presented by Richard Taylor, depicts the architecture and daily function of churches in Medieval Life. Most people who have no formal architecture training will think immediately of medieval churches when discussing architecture, and there’s a good reason for it: as the BBC programme states, their function as social hubs, protection and religious centres made them essential for our ancestors. This episode focusses on the visual magnificence of Blythburgh church in Suffolk, the ritual of the “churching of women” and even how the local pub and the local church were essential to each other!
